Eating as a Way to Lose Weight after Child Birth
It’s almost inevitable that you’ll want to lose weight immediately after giving birth to your new bundle of joy. This could be due to many personal or even external reasons. Media hype for one, Celebrity moms who speak about successfully losing weight almost effortlessly after given birth.
What you may not hear spoken about in celebrity articles and press releases is the fact that they have used their sufficient resources and time available to them to buy the best equipment or hire the best trainers to lose the extra weight they gained during pregnancy.
The post pregnancy period is sure to be a difficult time for you as you’ll need to adjust both your body and mindset to the weight loss challenges in front of you.
It is in this challenging period that your hormone levels will tend to return to normal, all your organs shift back to their rightful places and your body tries to figure out what nutrients it will need to nourish itself and your newborn.
You may not be aware that this period is quite sensitive as there is a need for extra nourishment especially as you’ll need to breastfeed and take care of your new baby. While you may want to start your weight loss regimen immediately some experts advise against this.
But there are ways to jumpstart the initiative without compromising nutrition, both for you and your newborn. Not all would believe that eating could be a good and effective strategy to shed off excess weight accumulated during pregnancy.
Carbohydrate Intake
If you should decide to drastically cut back on calories after giving birth this could actually have a reverse effect on your weight loss strategy resulting in a lack or loss of essential nutrients which is not advisable especially if you intend to breast feed. Carbohydrates in particular should not be left out of your daily diet as they are important to your recovery from the trauma of child birth and in performing tasks after giving birth, taking good care of your baby for instance. In general experts recommend diets for you, as a new mom, should consist of at least 50% carbohydrates.
So how can you consume enough carbohydrates without eating to many such that you lead to excessive calorific intake and inevitably further weight gain? The first effective method is to eliminate processed carbohydrates, also known as ‘empty calorie foods’. You must avoid processed foods known to contain too many calories and sugar that have fewer nutrients.
Processed carbohydrates are naturally stripped of nutrients, water, and fiber content. Such carbohydrates are complex in form and are not easily broken down by the body. Thus, they tend to be converted into stored fats, which accumulate further especially without sufficient physical activity which you won’t be up to at this point in your post pregnancy life.
You may be under the misconception that eating light in the morning and heavy during dinner could be a good strategy for you to lose weight. Actually it’s far better for you to eat a hearty breakfast and eat less in the evening as a good breakfast logically sets the stage for the entire day. It’s in the early morning that your body needs more calories to burn and convert into energy to help you through each strenuous new day.
Your metabolism, which is responsible for burning calories, is obviously highest during daytime. Therefore, no matter how much you indulge and eat during breakfast, you would be sure your body would use up the calorie intake through the joyous activities you’ll encounter nursing your newborn throughout the day.
